Camino Blog – Day 24

Valverde to Villares de Orbigo

Welcome to this Camino Blog. If you are new it might be best to start with the introduction. Otherwise, carry on.

Location: Villares de Orbigo

Distance: 24km – 502km total.

Weather: Fine and warm.

Terrain: Most of the day we walked next to the motorway so not particularly inspiring. However, ended in some nice towns.

Physical condition:Okay.

Accommodation: Another recommended albergue. When we were arrived we were informed by other guests (who presumably have walked this before) that this was the best place to stay on the Camino. A high bar!

Other: Nothing else to report

SB 12: Everything will be made new

  • You will make everything new

  • I will make everything new

  1. Justin. Sorry to be so slow to contribute, and I won’t start my excuses. I’ve enjoyed your blogs very much indeed and we can talk about them a lot more when you get home. Perhaps one idea to think about: how about a 13th SB? Jesus promoted the idea of two great commandments: (1) love the Lord your God with all …, and (2) love your neighbour as yourself. Your comments, I think, have all been about the first commandment, i.e. an understanding of God and our relationship with him. But how do I know someone accepts that first commandment – or the first 12 SBs? By their life. In the middle of that great exposition of grace – which you have presented well, and I agree with whole-heartedly – Paul (Rom 6:1f) exclaims in effect that if our lives don’t change radically then we haven’t grasped the holiness of God, the ugliness of sin, or the awesome power of his love. This doesn’t diminish in the slightest the message about grace, rather it demonstrates that we have understood its context and taken hold of it. Jesus’ response to someone’s claim to be practising BOTH commandments was: ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God’. What do you think?

    1. Hi. Glad you like the blog so far.

Regarding your point. I agree, but for me this is part of SB 11 – pretence is a sign of acceptance.
One criteria for being a SBs for me is that they are things that are not intuitive. It is intuitive that you will follow the rules in order to be a better person. It is NOT intuitive that in Christian belief that there is nothing we can do about becoming better people, we are simply being transformed. We try and reflect the character of him that does the transforming because we want to.

I am also aware (or at least Deb’s told me!) That these SB are highly influenced by my own issues. In my case having such a strong emphasis on Grace is necessary to combat my natural tendency to think that I can make myself a better person via my own efforts. Presumably others have things that they would add due to thier own issues.
